Higher Biology

Higher Biology consists of three units:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  • DNA and the genome                                    • Metabolism and survival                                • Sustainability and interdependence

By studying Higher Biology our learners will be able to understand a range of biology concepts, which can then be used to understand biology’s role in scientific issues.  Through a range of practical and research activities investigative skills, analytical thinking skills and problem solving skills will be developed.

The course is assessed through two question papers (exams) and an assignment, which will be marked by SQA and graded A to D.  The question papers are worth a total of 120 marks, which makes up 80% of the total assessment mark. The assignment makes up 20% of the total assessment mark. 

Higher courses can stand alone or follow on from National 5 qualifications.  Higher awards may lead to Advanced Highers, the Scottish Baccalaureate and a range of qualifications within Further and Higher Education

Homework

At the end of each topic* pupils are issued with a homework booklet, containing questions from previous SQA exams.  Pupils are also issued with an extended response jotter at the start of the year, in which they will answer longer questions taken from a range of sources.

*please note that sometimes two shorter topics may be combined into a single booklet
