S1
In S1 pupils are supported to develop their music literacy skills (reading and writing music), and apply this knowledge to playing a variety of classroom instruments including the bass guitar, drum kit and ukulele. Pupils will also learn about instruments of the orchestra, playing techniquies and general musical concepts. Pupils will explore the Creative Industries and have the opportunity to develoip their ability to use the digital audio workstation Mixcraft 9, as well as learning to use a variety of microphones to succcessfully capture sound. A creative festivals project allows pupils to develop their speaking and numeracy skills.
S2
In S2 pupils continue to develop their musical literacy and practical skills, where they focuss on two instruments of their choice. Pupils also learn about musical concepts including contemporary genres, through focussing on musicals and on film music and motifs. A Halloween project teaches pupils about sound foley and the sound for screen industy, as well as allowing them to produce a piece of their own sound foley using imported and self-captured sounds with Mixcraft 9. In term 3 pupils use software Sibelius to create their own composition. In term 4, pupils focus on a large group performance with a view to performing at the end of year show.
S3
In S3 pupils continue to develop their skills on two chosen instruments and develop their understanding of musical literacy. Pupils explore the popular music tradition from spiritual music to contemporary styles such as rap and pop music. Pupils also learn about the music of Scotland before investigating a world music style/genre of their choice and presenting this to the class. In term 4 pupils are encouraged to create a group performance which is intended for public performance, and there is a renewed focus on music literacy in preparation for S4.
