Religious Moral Education and Religious, Moral & Philosophical Studies
How can you support your young person in their RMPS career? Encourage timely completion of homework, discuss current moral issues, ask them to explain their learning to you.
What are RME & RMPS?
RME (Religious Moral Education) is the term given to core provision throughout a young person's education in accordance with government requirements. This is currently one period a week at Langholm Academy.
RME provides our young people with space to learn about the beliefs of other people, cultures and religions and compare them with their own beliefs. It opens dialogue about different moral issues that young people are forming opinions about and supports them in presenting their views and listening to others.
At the end of S3 and in addition to senior core RME, pupils can opt to take RMPS (Religious, Moral and Philosophical Studies) which is the SQA certificated qualification at National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher.
The three levels of certificated RMPS that we provide at Langholm, develop and nurture the skills of analysis and evalution learned in the BGE. Candidates delve deeper into philosophy, religious and non-religious responses to moral issues and the beliefs and practices of individual religions.
Department staff
The RME & RMPS deparment is led by Mrs Zoe Brown.
Mrs Brown holds a BA(Hons) in Theology, Religious studies and History and PGCE Secondary Education. She is currently working towards Msc Professional Education and Leadership with the University of Stirling. She is a member of NATRE and ATRES and is a marker for the SQA Higher and Advanced Higher RMPS teams.
Mrs Brown has been a member of Langholm Academy staff for eleven years having previously taught in North Yorkshire.
