The Science in the Environment course is developed and overseen by Mrs Ginns (Biology/Science) and facilitiated through Mrs Farrer (Learning Support).

Through the study of National 2 Science in the Environment, learners are encouraged to develop the confidence and ability to tackle everyday situations involving science. Learners will use their knowledge of science, equipment, tools and materials to make scientifically informed choices in a range of personal and social situations. Learners will also begin to develop their awareness of some of the social, moral and environmental issues involving science, and begin to communicate their knowledge and experience of science to others.

The Science in the Environment course consists of two mandatory units:

• Exploring Everyday Materials - pupils will explore the properties of different materials, and changes that can be made to those materials through variation of heat or force and  other materials.
• Living Things - candidates are provided with opportunities to explore the human body and different systems in the human body, as well as the characteristics of other living things.

All pupils must also complete one optional unit from the following choices:

• Keeping our Planet Healthy - candidates explore issues concerning the environment and the impact humans have on our planet through the resources we use in everyday life. This unit raises candidates’ awareness of some of the harmful effects we cause on our environment and to participate in activities that help to reduce those harmful effects.
• Forces - provides candidates with opportunities to explore different types of forces, the effect of forces on objects, and the size and direction of forces.

In addition to the Science in the Environment award, candidates will have the opportunity to gain an additional unit in Practical Experiemens.  The general aim of the Unit is to provide opportunities for learners to carry out practical experiments in science-related contexts.
