S1/S2 - Craft, Design and Graphics

In S1 and S2 pupils attend Technical Education one period a week. Over the course of the year they will undertake a number of tasks that are built around the experiences and outcomes from CfE and will cover Craft, Design, and Graphics elements.

A large portion of the present course is focused on developing skills in communicating ideas and creative thoughts through sketching and design tasks with the ability to critically evaluate their own and others work also being a key element of the work we undertake. Pupils will also have the opportunity to experience manufacturing tasks in both Acrylic and Wood employing traditional tools and equipment.

We make use of 3D modelling software across all year groups in Technical education and software that we use ia AutoDesk Inventor Professional. This software is free to download with a letter from the school or a picture of the pupils young scot card. If you would like to download the software it can be found here: Autodesk Inventor

There are a number of other free 3D modelling softwares that can be downloaded and used at home. One of these softwares is "Google Sketchup". This can be downloaded free with a Glow email address: Google Sketchup

S3 Graphic Communication

In S3, pupils who choose to take Graphic Communication will receive two periods per week. Over the course of the year they will undertake a number of tasks that are built around the experiences and outcomes from Level 4 CfE and will cover Graphic Communication elements. Towards the end of the year we will be looking to transition int some of the National 4 course content to prepare pupils for returning in senior phase.

The S3 course is split into two main units: Manual Graphics and Computer Aided Design.

The Manual Graphics unit covers the following topics; two-point perspective sketching, rendering using coloured pencils, orthographic sketching and desktop publishing planning.
The Computer Aided Design unit covers the folliwng topics; 2D sketching, 3D modelling, 3D edits, Orthographic drawings, Desktop Publishing.

Throughout the year we use the Design Class website to view course content videos and Computer Aided Design resources. This can be used by the pupils at home if they wish to continue thier learning after school. The website can be found here: Design Class

S3 Practical Craft Skills

In S3, pupils who choose to take Practical Craft Skills will receive two periods per week. Over the course of the year they will undertake a number of tasks that are built around the experiences and outcomes from Level 4 CfE and will cover Craft and Desing elements. Towards the end of the year we will be looking to transition into some of the National 4 course content to prepare pupils for returning in senior phase.

The S3 course is split into three main units: Carcase Construction, Flat Frame Construction, Theory Knowledge.

The Flat Frame Construction unit covers the following topics; Measuring and Marking Out Tools, Woodworking Joints – Dowel joint, Corner Halving, T-halving, Cross Halving. The model that is completed is a Mirror Frame.
The Carcase Construction unit covers the following topics; Measuring and Marking Out Tools, Woodworking Joints - Dowel joint, Through Housing Joint, Stopped Housing Joint. The model that is completes is a Technology Stand.
The Theory Unit covers; safety in the workshop, wood types, hand tools, machine tools, surface preparation and finishing.
