GIRLS TEAM QUALIFIES FOR SCHOOLS SOUTH WEST REGIONAL FINALS
| We had two girls football teams in Dumfries today playing in the SPAR Future Stars Football Cup. This is a nationwide Girls Football competition stretching across all six Scottish FA Regions.
Teams from Annan Academy, Dumfries High School, Langholm Academy, St Joseph’s College, Stranraer Academy and Wallace High School took part with all entering S1/2 and S3/4 teams.
There was some excellent football on display with many club players taking part including players from Queen of the South and girls who play for the Annan Athletic ladies’ team.
The S3/S4 team fought hard against some talented footballers, narrowly missing out on qualification. The S1/S2 team played some great football and in doing so have qualified for the South West Regional Finals that will take place at Hamilton Palace Sports Grounds in January. Winners from this event will qualify for the national finals.

Conan is heading Stateside!
BREAKING NEWS: S6 pupil Conan H, who is currently ranked number 1 in Scotland in the U-20 5000m race event has received 3 full scholarship offers to study in the USA!!!
Conan has the choice of Charleston Southern University in North Carolina, La Salle University, Pennsylvania or Texas A&M University, Corpus Christi, with other offers still coming in. Conan has shown complete dedication to his sport and his studies for many years and fully deserves this huge achievement. We are so proud of you, Conan!
SCARLETT IN SCOTTISH CUP FINAL
In more excellent sporting news this weekend, S5 pupil Scarlett CB will be heading to Murrayfield Stadium for the second time this year to play in the Scottish Rugby Under 18’s Girls National Cup Final.
In today’s semi-final against Tayside & Perth played at in Inch Park in Edinburgh, her Edinburgh Harlequins team came out on top winning 24-17. This included two tries from Scarlett who plays loosehead prop (No.1) for the team.
Scarlett, who is also supported by the “Welcome to Langholm” Future Champions Awards will now look forward to the final on Saturday 10th December against Stirling County at Scottish Rugby’s National Stadium.
International Success for Matilda
15-year-old Matilda B made her first appearance for Scotland in the (SIAB) Schools International Athletics Board Pentathlon at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow. Four boys and four girls made up the Scotland Under 16 team with all athletes competing in the Long Jump, 60m Hurdles, High Jump, Shot Putt and 800m.
Matilda won a bronze medal with the Scotland Team in a very close scoring event. Wales led and Ireland were in last place position with the final event, the 800m to run. However, with the event being so close, Ireland moved to first with impressive runs and Wales fell to last place following the final event.
Knitting for Neighbours Community Project
Langholm Academy’s first ‘Knitting for Neighbours’ group session got underway this afternoon, combining pupils, staff and community volunteers. Well done everyone
International Stage for Matilda
We have just received the amazing news this morning that S4 pupil Matilda B has been selected to represent Scottish Schools in the International Pentathlon being held on Saturday 26th November! The match is taking place at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow and includes school teams from England, Ireland and Wales. Huge congratulations Matilda - your hard work and commitment to your sport is incredible!
YOUNG AMBASSADORS CONFERENCE 2022
Two young people from our school, Seth Brown and Jenna Robb had the opportunity to attend the Young Ambassadors Conference at the home of Scottish Football, Hampden Park, Glasgow in September.
Each year two pupils from every secondary school in Scotland have the opportunity to be selected as Young Ambassadors to promote sport and motivate and inspire other young people to get involved in sport in their schools, clubs and local communities or to be more physically active.
The Young Ambassadors programme is organised by sportscotland and is funded by the National Lottery. It is a key element of sportscotland’s contribution to developing young people as leaders in sport. They believe that young people make a meaningful and important contribution as leaders in sport, and that young people should have access to a range of opportunities of leadership roles which reflect their interests and abilities.
Summer Dance June 2022
We managed to get a quick picture of most of the Class of 2022 before the fun began last night!
A huge well done to this fantastic group of young people for planning such a fabulous Summer Dance for Langholm Academy pupils last night. An amazing night was had and we are incredibly proud of you all. Well done!
MOLLY SELECTED FOR SCHOOLS REGIONAL FOOTALL SQUAD
| S2 pupil Molly Henderson, still only 12 years of age, has been selected for the Dumfries and Galloway Regional Schools Under 15 Football Squad.
Following trials last week in Castle Douglas, Molly who plays in midfield caught the eye of coaches and has been invited to join the squad for games against other regional school teams in Scotland.
Molly currently trains with Langholm Girls Football Club after school on a Thursday and with Annan Athletic Girls. She will also be helping with the girls primary coaching on a Thursday along with secondary pupils and players Martha Brown and Hannah Jeffrey.

MEDALS, PB’s and SCOTTISH No1
| Matilda Brockley (S4) and her younger sister Antonia Brockley (S2) had quite a day at the Under15 4J Studios Scottish Athletics Age Group Championships in Grangmouth in August.
Matilda started in the High Jump where she jumped a 4cm personal best of 1.54m to secure a bronze medal. She then ran a new personal best of 11.76 seconds in the heats of the 75m hurdles before hitting a couple of hurdles in the final at the end of a demanding day. However, her stand out performance of the day came in the Triple Jump where she jumped 10.68cm to win the gold medal and a jump that ranks her No.1 in Scotland and No.7 in the UK at Under 15.
Antonia, who just had her 13th birthday in June was the youngest athlete competing in the 100m that included 50 athletes and in the 200m that included 23 athletes. She ran a personal best time in the 100m of 13.12 seconds to finish in a fantastic 7th place. The race was won in a time that broke the Under15 100m record that had stood since 1975.
S5 Leadership: Hosting the Queen's Platinum Jubilee coffee morning
Thank you to everyone who supported the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee coffee morning, organised by S5 this morning. The total raised was £366! Thank you also for donations for the raffle and bake sale
S3 Outward Bound trip to Ullswater
We are beyond proud of our super bunch of S3 pupils who showed our school values of Respect, Responsibility and Endeavour in abundance at Ullswater in May 2022. We received so many compliments on their excellent manners and attitudes to learning. Huge thank you to Mr German, Mrs Farrer, Miss Waitt and Dr Gordon for being on duty 24hrs a day to make this trip happen. Finally, we received incredible support from the David Stevenson Trust, who 100% funded each pupil’s £445 place to attend the trip - THANK YOU!
Sports Day June 2022
What a fantastic day we had celebrating Sports Day at Langholm Academy. The sun shone, the pupils competed well, showing sportsmanship throughout and we even had a visit from the ice-cream van to help everyone cool off! Well done All.
Cluster Staff Wellbeing event
Our Cluster teaching staff had a great afternoon playing bowls after school today. This was the first time our staff have came together in-person from the schools in over 2 years and a great time was had by all. Special thanks to Langholm New Town Bowling Club for hosting us, and congratulations to Mr Little and Mr Wood, novices in the sport but overall winners on the day!
Rugby U-15 Player of the Year - Greig Cartner

Huge congratulations to our S3 pupil Greig Cartner who was awarded Hawick Rugby Under 15 player of the season tonight. He received his trophy from Darcy Graham, Scottish Rugby Union player tonight!

SCHOOLS REGIONAL NETBALL SQUAD | Congratulations to two of our pupils from the academy who have been selected for the Dumfries and Galloway Schools Regional Netball Squad. 
Jessica Smith and Lucy Hall started playing netball at Canonbie Primary School under the guidance of Teacher, Mrs Johnstone and were selected following recent trials in Dumfries. They will be joined in the squad by two more former Canonbie Primary School pupils, Jessica Forster and Alice Coupar.
World Book Day 2022
Lots of activities were organised across our Cluster to celebrate our love of books on World Book Day. 
Langholm Academy staff celebrated by dressing as their favourite book character and handed out free books to S1-S3 pupils today to mark World Book Day.

CONAN HARPER (ATHLETICS)
CONAN HARPER (ATHLETICS) | Congratulations to Conan Harper from Langholm who won a Bronze Medal at today’s Scottish Athletics 4J National Indoor Championships in the Emirates Arena, Glasgow. 
Still aged only 16 years of age, Conan was competing in the U20 age group for the first time. Running in the 1500m, the first three laps of the race were run tactically and slowly before the pace lifted for the remaining laps. Conan (pictured no.454) finished strongly in the race to take a bronze medal on the line with a time of 4:00.35. 
Conan had also been given approval to run in the Scottish Athletics National Senior Men’s 3000m event in the same venue only two days earlier on the Friday evening. Competing for his club, Teviotdale Harriers, he ran a time of 8:33.90 that earned him a fantastic 4th place finish, less than a second outside of the medals. 
Conan who receives support through the “Welcome to Langholm” Future Champions Awards will race in the Scottish Athletics Cross Country Championships at Falkirk on Saturday followed with the Scottish Schools Cross Country Championships in Queensferry the following Thursday.

Carpet Bowling
The Scottish carpet bowling association under 18’s competition was played at Castle Douglas on Saturday. The winner was S4 pupil Ryan Wood and the runner up was S3 Matt Hall.
Ryan Wood and Jamie Hall also were runners-up in the main pairs tournament held after the junior singles where there were 140 bowlers playing from clubs in the south of Scotland. Great achievement for all the boys.
Giant Heptathlon Scottish Champions
BREAKING NEWS: Langholm Academy Heptathlon Athletics team have won the Scottish Championship for the second year running and are Scottish Champions again! Congratulations everyone for your fantastic efforts
SCHOOL NETBALL
Our secondary school netball teams were back in action this evening with games away at St Joseph’s College in Dumfries.
The S1/S2 Junior Team got the afternoon off to a good start with an 8-4 victory against the St Joseph’s College Junior Development team.
Our S3 Junior Team then followed this up with a 12-4 victory over their junior team.
Last up were the senior team with Langholm fielding a very young team that included five players from S1 and S2. Against much older girls, they played an excellent match but narrowly went down 13-9 in a very close game.

FORMER PUPIL RETURNS FOR GIRLS FOOTBALL | After school football for girls in the Langholm Academy school cluster continues to go from strength to strength.
With 39 girls now registered and training each Thursday evening, discussions have already taken place to organise friendly games for both primary and secondary teams in the new year and hopefully a trip to watch the Scotland’s women team play at Hampden Park.
The girls were also joined at this week’s session by former Langholm Academy pupil and current Carlisle United player Gillian Telford from Newcastleton. Gillian said after the session, “It’s great to see so many girls just enjoying the game and more importantly, having fun. There is also lots of potential there and hopefully some players to look out for in the future”
In addition, we will have news in the coming weeks about a successful funding application that will allow the girls football to remain free of charge into 2022.

Inspiring Others Award
Huge congratualtions to Danielle Wilson, S2 pupil at Langholm Academy, who won the Inspiring Others Award from the Young Kennel Club this week (22nd Nov 2021).
The Award celebrates young people and thier dogs, who through their positive attitude and inspirational approach, have proven to be good role models to others. Well done Danielle!
School Football Selection for Matt
SCHOOL FOOTBALL | Congratulations to S3 pupil Matt Hall who after attending recent trials has been selected for the Under 15 Regional Squad to represent the Dumfries and Galloway Schools Football Association.
They potentially have their first fixture next week against Glasgow Schools.

ROAD RACE NEWS
SILVER MEDAL FOR CONAN HARPER AT SCOTTISH SECONDARY SCHOOLS ROAD RACE CHAMPIONSHIPS | Conan Harper, S5 Pupil at Langholm Academy today won a silver medal at the Scottish Secondary Schools National Road Race Championships in Dunfermline.
Conan was beaten only by S6 pupil, Fraser Gilmour from Boclair Academy in Glasgow over the 3-mile course. Fraser is a British Hill Running and Scottish Schools Cross Country Champion and also runs for Scotland.
A fantastic effort by Conan who receives talented athlete support through the “Welcome to Langholm” Future Champions Awards.

ATHLETICS SUCCESS
CONAN HARPER (ATHLETICS) | Congratulations to S5 pupil Conan Harper who today won a bronze medal at the Scottish Schools Indoor Athletics Championships at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow.
Running in the Over 16’s 1500m and against a large starting field of 45 runners, many of them older, Conan secured his place in the final by easing off to come 2nd in his heat and taking 4 seconds off his previous personal best with a time of 4 mins 06 seconds.
10 runners qualified for the final, only one of whom was younger than Conan. He produced a fantastic run, taking another 8 seconds of his personal best with a time of 3.58.82. The winner of the race broke the Scottish Schools 1500m record that stood since 2006 and the National U17 record that stood since 1981.
Conan pictured on the right receives financial support through the “Welcome to Langholm” Future Champions Awards. He will compete for the school again at The Scottish Schools Cross Country Championships on the 3rd March in South Queensferry. Runners that do well in this race have the potential to be selected for the Scottish Schools National Team that will compete in the SIAB International on the 26th March in Wales.

Another excellent turn out with 36 young people attending. The club will re-start after the holidays.
Junior Golf Success
Congratulations to school pupil Brady Wilson who won yesterday’s Junior Golf Open at Hawick Golf Club.
Brady plays off a handicap of 11 and shot a round of 77 with a net score of 66 to win the competition.
Brady receives funding through the “Welcome to Langholm” Future Champions Awards that financially support talented young sports people.

Meet Langholm Academy’s Head Pupil Team
Congratulations go to Sarah Stevens and James Kay (Head Pupils) and Kayla McVittie and Jake Park (Depute Head Pupils). Pupils were put through their paces with presentations, pupil/staff votes and panel interviews to be appointed to their positions. We look forward to working with the Head Pupil Team, to lead Pupil Voice within Langholm Academy.
Science Fair
Fun was had all round in the annual science fair this week. Pupils demonstrated their higher order thinking skills to design and produce projects across the event. S6 Fundraising
Our S6 Pupils are leading a range of events this year, including class quizzes, dress down days, bingo and have a range of other exciting plans. All fundraising will go towards the annual school dance, which we plan to take place in April/May 2022.
DYW Events November 2021
This week saw the start of our DYW events, with our first one carrying out a site visit to Ashleigh Construction Site.
RUGBY
SCARLETT CROSSAN BROWN (RUGBY) | 15-year-old Scarlett Crossan Brown from Langholm continues to make great progress in the world of girl’s rugby.
Scarlett’s team, East Lothian Girls have remained undefeated since the season started in August.
Since the start of the year, they have also been competing in the Under 16 Girl’s Scottish Cup. Competing in the two qualifying groups are Caithness, Cartha Queen’s Park, Whitecraigs, Garioch, Fife Girls, Tayside Girls, Biggar, Dumfries Saints, Kelpies Rugby, East Lothian Girls, Stirling County and West of Scotland.
After three games they top their group after defeating Kelpies from Bannockburn, Falkirk, Grangemouth and Hillfoots Rugby Clubs (40-22), Stirling County RFC (30-10) and on Sunday, Dumfries Saints RFC (55-10). 
Scarlett who receives “Welcome to Langholm” Future Champions Awards support plays prop for her team and scored two tries on Sunday taking her total try count in the Scottish Cup to four tries.
