Rotary Quiz Success!
A huge well done to our P7 pupils who took part in the Rotary Quiz Regional finals today. Both teams worked incredibly well and we are delighted that Murray, Cieran, Ella and Martha were runners up will now go to the National Finals!

Well done to the P6 and P7 boys who represented Langholm Primary School yesterday in the RJW Sponsored Football Tournament. They played against 6 other Primary Schools, winning two games, drawing two and losing two. The boys showed great team spirit and sportsmanship throughout. Well done!

Racing To School
A very cold, yet enjoyable day at Carlisle Racecourse! The kids worked together to convert imperial and metric units, explored the kit used by jockeys, became health and safety officers by calculating how many horses are allowed in the parade ring at any one time and looked at how the jockeys are weighed and measured.
The children were also asked to judge and award the “best turned out” horse for the 1st race!
Many thanks must go to John from the John & Mary Elliot Memorial Trust, without his continued generosity, this trip would not be able to go ahead.
Disability Sports
Congratulations to Jacon, Cooper, Sarah and Junior who represented Langholm Primary in the Disability Sports competition. Jacob came 2nd place and Cooper 1st place for the Primary Boys. Sarah came 2nd for the Girls Primary and Junior got a special certificate for good sportsmanship and participation.

Scottish Day
On Friday 30th January, Langholm Primary and Nursery held our annual Scottish Day. Children wore 'a touch of tartan' and learned about Scotland. We ended the day with a full school assembly, with each class performing a Scottish Song to the rest of the school.

Family Open Session

Community Litter Pick
Very proud of how well the P7 children engaged with the community Litterpick!
They worked alongside Margaret Pool and The Langholm Initiative to help clean up their community. 12 huge bin bags filled with rubbish, along with an old bike, a road bollard and even part of a bed being removed from our local woodland areas.

Restart a Heart!
Well done to our Primary pupils who took part in the #RestartAHeart live lesson, helping to remind us all how to do CPR (DR. ABC - Danger, Response, Airway, Breathing and Circulation)
We also explored what a defibrillator is, where they are located in our local area and how to safely access them by calling 999.
Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSO)

Primary 5 being creative!
FLOCK is a collaborative project, which will enable children and young people across Dumfries and Galloway to gain hands on experience with clay, working with ceramic artist Frances Ross. FLOCK will give young people the chance to get clay under their fingernails and experience the transformational power of ceramics. Primary 5 pupils at Langholm Primary were lucky enough to get the opportunity to take part in this workshop at the beginning of Term 3. Their fantastic ceramic birds will be displayed somewhere in Dumfries and Galloway in 2026, alongside birds made by other pupils in the region. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and even got to take home their own creations too!
Curling
Langholm primary P7 pupils had a fantatsic time at their Curling's Cool session last week. The learned the rules of the game and were able to build skills and techniques before going on to play some games. Many thanks to Bowman Little Trust Fund who kindly funded both the coaching session and the transport.
Golden Time!
Today, the pupils took part in our new Golden Time activities. This allows the children to experience a range of different activities which are organised by the teachers. The children are in mixed groups from P1 up to P7. This allows them to work together and develop a range of skills. They all seemed to be having a great time!
Racing to School for P7
Langholm Primary 7 pupils had a fantastic day today at Carlisle Racecourse. They were there for their Racing To School day which involves looking at maths in a real context. We would like to say a huge thank you to The John and Mary Memorial Trust who kindly sponsor the event for us and also to The Bowman Little Trust who provided the transport for us.
Curling Competition
Very well done to our P7 Curling team who took part in the Curling's Cool Festival at Lockerbie Ice Rink. They got into the play-offs coming 5th out of 16 teams. A fantastic effort showing great sportsmanship and teamwork!
ANNANDALE AND ESKDALE PRIMARY SCHOOLS BADMINTON COMPETITION 2024
On Monday 19th February, some of our pupils attended the annual primary school’s badminton competition at Lockerbie Academy sponsored by the “Welcome to Langholm” Future Champions Awards.
It was great to see so many children enjoying the sporting competition and there was some very good badminton on display from everyone.
Thank you to Lockerbie Academy for use of their facilities and to the sports leaders from Annan and Lockerbie Academy who volunteered as umpires and helped with scoring the event.

Creation Mill
Langholm Primary 3 and 4 have been working with Creation Mill to try out different creative activities. They are enjoying the challenge of trying something new!
Scottish Day
On Friday 26th January, Langholm Primary and Nursery held their annual Scottish Day. The children came to school wearing a 'touch of tartan' and spent the morning learning about Scottish culture. In the afternoon, each class performed a Scottish song in our assembly.
Green Flag Award
Congratulations to our Eco group on achieving the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award! The group have worked with the whole school and nursery to deveop our environmental awarness. This has included litter picks in school and in the community, bird watching and recycling.
Children In Need 2023
Langholm Primary had a great day at school supporting BBC Children In Need. Pupil Council voted for a PJ day with all the children taking part in the Joe Wicks 'Bearpee' challenge! The school raised £162.40. Well done everyone!

String Quartet
Langholm P6 and P7 pupils were lucky enough to attend the Buccleuch Centre this week for a performance by Edinburgh String Quartet. They learned about the instruments and the different sounds they make and heard different pieces of music.

Generation Science
Primary 1, 2 and 3 were lucky enough to get a visit from genration Science. They held a fun and interactive workshop about earth and Space. The children had a great time learning a lot of facts in a fun way!
Comic Relief
Langholm Primary supported Comic Relief this year with a non-uniform and 'touch of red' day. Children could bring in donations if they wanted to and £154.37 was raised.
Racing to School - Maths in Action!

World Book Day 2023
Langholm Primary pupils celebrated World Book Day by bringing their favourite book to school. They carried out various activities including sharing them with their friends, writing reviews and designing new front covers.

Community Art Projects
We have been lucky enough over the past year to be involved with some exciting arts projects within Langholm. Firstly, we were involved with the Langholm Made project. Pupils drew pictures of things which had a meaning to them linked to Langholm. These have been created into 2 large table clothes and presented to the school. We are looking forward to our next coffee morning to show these off!
We were also involved in the Langholm People Project. This saw our pupils creating different self-portraits, in different ways. Lucy from Outpost Arts presented the book to school showcasing the work. The pupils have loved looking back through it!
Scottish Poems
Our primary 4, 5 and 6 pupils have been working hard to learn and recite a range of Scots Poems. The pupils then presented them to our judges Mrs Anderson and Mrs Vidler who were both very impressed with the talent shown! Well done to everyone who took part and especially well done to our winners. The first place winner received a £10 book token kindly donated by the Ladies Burns Society.

Crochet Club
Langholm primary pupils enjoyed their first Crochet Club this week. The group are being supported by Creation Mill and Abbie Laidlaw.
Rights Respecting School
Some members of our Rights Respecting School group introduced three of the articles to the school. Article 12 – Respect for the Children’s views, Article 27 – Food clothing and a safe home and Article 18 Responsibility of Parents. They talked about what we do in school to support these rights.
Eco Group
Eco group have been busy helping in the local community.
Firstly, they carried out a community litter pick. They were disappointed to find that there was litter, even when there were bins available to use.
Following this, they were invited by Esk Valley Nature Reserve to replenish the trees at Hallpath Woodland.

Benedetti Session
Langholm Primary School were given the opportunity to take part in a Benedetti session.
During the session, the pupils explored playing with expression, storytelling, sound production, freedom, improvisation, physical and mental wellbeing and understanding the context of the music, as well as delving into specific technical challenges. They were encouraged to embrace opposites, to focus and to relax, to be serious and to have fun as they worked towards a common goal.
The sessions were generously funded by The Stevenson Trust.
Children In Need 2022
Pupil council were delighted to encourage the school to support Children in Need. They discussed Children’s Rights and felt strongly that we should support other children to help them achieve their rights. The children came to school wearing non-uniform or pyjamas/onesies and raised an amazing £185.19 for the charity.
Eco Group
Eco group have been working to develop their action plan. One of their actions was to carry out a community litter pick. They carried that out this week and were disappointed to find people had been littering in the community, rather than using bins.
P7 Curling
P7 enjoyed a fantastic morning at Lockerbie Ice Rink learning the sport of Curling. From no experience to playing a game in 2 hours! The pupils were praised for their enthusiasm, ability and resilience from the volunteers.

P7 Operation Safety
From learning about fire hazards, water safety, electrical safety and cyber safety to saving lives, P7 had an exciting time today at Operation Safety.

Harvest Assembly
We were delighted to hold our Harvest Assembly on Friday 23rd September. This was our first full school assembly with our families in 3 years! We all enjoyed listening to the children singing their songs, our new nursery children also joined in! The children kindly donated food items which we have distributed to Langholm Day Centre and a local foodbank. Many thanks to you all for your support.

John Muir Award
Congratulations to Langholm Primary 7 who have successfully completed their John Muir Award. To achieve this they attended 5 full days at Tarras Valley Nature Reserve. They completed a variety of tasks including pond dipping, making bird feeders and identifying habitats. Canonbie Primary pupils joined them for their final session as part of the P7 transition program. The pupils are looking forward to viewing the video footage of their learning.

Summer Fayre

It might have been raining but it certainly didn’t stop the fun! A MASSIVE £1867.30 was raised from the sale of raffle squares and on the night! Many thanks to Parent Partnership for their hard work in organising the event and to the local business who supported us through donations of prizes: Londis, John M Ritchie, Lucy McLeod, Wilson Pet Shop, JK Salon, Chloe at la Belle, Holmspun, Browns Butchers, Crown Hotel, Pelosis, Beccleuch Centre and Davidsons Chemist. Special thanks also to Mr Little and Mr Robison who spent most of the evening having wet sponges thrown at them!
Langholm P5-7 pupils had the opportunity to try some Parkour. The opportunity was funded delivered through the What We Do Now project. The pupils had a wonderful time learning new skills in a safe and controlled way.
Gaspard's Foxtrot
Pupils from Langholm Primary had the opportunity to watch the concert of Gaspard’s Foxtrot which was performed at the Buccleuch Centre by the RSNO, Scotland’s national Orchestra. All the pupils thoroughly enjoyed the experience and completed follow up activities when they returned to school.

Cluster Staff Wellbeing event
Our Cluster teaching staff had a great afternoon playing bowls after school today. This was the first time our staff have came together in-person from the schools in over 2 years and a great time was had by all. Special thanks to Langholm New Town Bowling Club for hosting us, and congratulations to Mr Little and Mr Wood, novices in the sport but overall winners on the day!
Queen's Platinum Jubilee Primary Celebrations
Langholm Primary and Nursery had a fantastic day celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. They came to school wearing red, white and blue and spent time this morning making flags and crowns and learning about the Queen. The school joined together for a street party lunch and enjoyed a visit from some very important guests! Many thanks to Parent Partnership for providing each pupil with a badge and pencil to mark this special occasion.

The Jubilee celebrations continued at Langholm Nursery today with the children having afternoon tea! The children helped to prepare for the event by making cucumber sandwiches, baking scones and cakes and making crowns and flags. They were delighted to be using China cups and plates!

Celebrating our Volunteers
VOLUNTEERS' WEEK SCOTLAND 2022 | Volunteers Week that runs from the 1st - 7th June is an annual celebration and a chance to say thank you to volunteers for the contribution they make in their local communities.
Alan Wilson is a volunteer who helps with the girl’s football coaching on Thursdays after-school.
Alan has recently retired from 30 years of service with Police Scotland and was looking for something to do to fill a bit of time. He has previously worked with young people, helped coach a boy’s football team and due to the popularity of girl’s football, he offered to help.
And his support is much appreciated as there are now nearly 60 girls aged P5-S2 registered to play football on Thursday evenings. We certainly wouldn’t be able to accommodate these numbers without his help and the help of other young people including Freya Blaikie, Matilda Brockley and Spencer Armstrong.
Alan says, “the most rewarding part of volunteering is seeing the enthusiasm and happy faces of all those involved regardless of their ability, as well as their willingness to learn from the coaches.”

Health Week 2022
Langholm Nursery and Primary pupils had a fantastic Health Week. They took part in a range of activities thinking about their physical and mental health. They had visits from the police and paramedics and P6 and P7 also had the opportunity to learn how to do CPR.
Other activities included: cricket, tennis, football, rugby, bowls, aerobics, dance, athletics, team building, obstacle course, boxing, fruit kebab making, smoothy bike, mindfulness and learning about the importance of healthy eating! The final activity was a full school danceathon!

Sports Day 2022
Langholm Primary and nursery had a fantastic Sports Day on 27th May. The children showed perseverance, teamwork and encouraged each other throughout. It was a pleasure to welcome our parents, carers, families and friends back to watch the children and the sun even made an appearance! 
Road Safety
Our Primary 6 pupils have been looking at Road Safety. We contacted PC McGoldrick to ask her to come and look at the safety of our roads. The primary 6 pupils worked with her and PC Irons to identify the features which made our roads safe and also things which could be improved. As a result of this, PC McGoldrick has contacted the local roads department to request that our yellow lines are repainted and the lights which flash to warn traffic to slow down to 20mph are fixed.
The pupils also had the opportunity to measure the speed of the traffic on the roads. We were very pleased that no one was driving too fast!
Daily Mile 10th Anniversary
Thursday 28th April marked the 10th anniversary of the Daily Mile. To celebrate this, all pupils did the daily mile together completing 10 laps of the 3G pitch. Many pupils did more than this, clocking up over 20 laps! In total the nursery and primary walked 2130 laps - that's mover 350 miles! What a fantastic effort from everyone!
Easter Egg Hunt
Many thanks to the Academy Head Pupil Team for organising an Egg Hunt for the primary pupils. Clues were hidden around the playground and the children had to find them then work out the mystery words! All the children received a prize. The children also came to school in non-uniform. The money raised will be split between the Academy Summer Dance and the Primary school fund.

Castle Day!
Langholm Priamry P2 and P3 pupils had a fantastic time with their end of topic theme day. The children made crowns and protective armour and had a day of castle related learning and fun!

SPORTSHALL ATHLETICS FESTIVAL
All school children aged P1–P6 from Langholm and Canonbie Primary Schools enjoyed a day of Sportshall Athletics in Langholm Academy.
The event was planned and delivered by this year’s sports leaders as part of their curricular timetable. 
Four teams including Tarras, Wauchope, Esk and Canonbie competed in a variety of track and field events. Although today was not about winning, both the morning and afternoon sessions were won by the P1-P3 and P4-P6 teams from Tarras, pictured here with the sports leaders. We hope all the children enjoyed it. 
A big thank you to the sports leaders for organising today’s event and experience for the primary school children. 
Red Nose Day 2022!
Langholm Primary Pupil Council decided that they would like to have a 'wear something funny for money' day for Comic Relief this year. The children came up with fantatsic ideas including wearing wigs, odd socks, wearing clothes backwards and even wearing underpants on their heads! Well done eveyone for taking part!
Science on Tour!
Primay 3, 4 and 5 had a fantastic day with the scientists from the Reece Lab at Edinburgh University. They used microscopes linked to laptops to look at the different stages of the life of a mosquito. They transferred samples using pipettes and sorted out the adult females and males using a magnifying glass. They were also able to look carefully at live mosquitoes and watch how the females were attracted to warmth. An amazing experience!!
Girls Netball
LANGHOLM PRIMARY NETBALL CLUB | Great to see a new Netball Club starting in Langholm Primary School this week. 
With new bibs and balls, children in P6 - P7 are being given the opportunity to play netball after school with Mrs Paisley.
This will help them learn the rules and develop their skills with the potential to enter teams into a Fun 5’s Primary Schools Netball Festival that will be held in Annan in June. 
GIRLS FOOTBALL
GIRLS FIRST FOOTBALL MATCH | Following a fantastic response to the girl’s football sessions we started last November, the primary school girls made their eagerly anticipated debut this evening on the school 3G pitch. 
We welcomed a girls’ team from Gretna Youth Academy (with three boys to make up the numbers) to play friendly games and, with enough girls playing football in Langholm, we were able to field three 7-aside teams with a substitute and make it a four-team round-robin event.
The girls aged between P5 – P7 have only been training for three months and in this short time have shown great effort, dedication and made great progress. And for that reason, there was no expectation on them other than to try their best and enjoy the games. All three teams performed admirably however, Gretna Youth Academy ran out eventual winners of the round robin competition that finished with an entertaining goalless final game and the girls asking who they are playing next !!!!

Our S1/S2 team are looking forward to playing in Dumfries on Tuesday in the first round of the Spar Future Stars Football Tournament which has pathways to national finals.
And such has been the success of the girl’s football we are currently working on a strip design for the junior and senior teams, and we are very grateful for the offer of potential sponsorship from a local business.
Funding has been secured to keep the girls football sessions free of charge and the majority of the girls are looking forward to a trip to Hampden Park on Tuesday 12th April to watch Scotland v Spain ladies in a World Cup Qualifying Match. A Spanish team that includes Alexia Putellas, the current UEFA Women's Player of the Year, 2021 Women's Ballon d'Or Winner and captain of the current Champions League Winners, Barcelona. 
Racing To School
P7 pupils from Langholm Primary had a fantastic day at Carlisle Race Course for their Racing to School day. It was an opportunity to carry out some outdoor maths learning while learning about the industry.
World Book Day March 2022
World Book Day
Langholm Primary had a fantastic World Book Day on Thursday 3rd March 2022.
All classes read 'The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs' and then completed a range of learning around it. Pupils took part in STEM, HWB, drama, listening and talking and art activities to name a few. Nursery also had their first transition experience by joining P1 for a walk to the woods. Once there they worked together to collect materials to build houses. As much as they 'huffed and puffed' they couldn't blow their houses down!
All classes took part in paired reading, allowing the older pupils to share their love of reading with the younger pupils. A fantastic day all round!
Arts Award
Congratulations to Sam and Oliver in achieving their Explorer Arts Award. They started this award before lockdown with Outpost Arts and have continued themselves to complete it. Well done!
The Queen's Platinum Jubilee
On 7th February, Langholm Primary started to learn about the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. We look forward to doing more work about it later in the year as the celebrations continue.

ANNANDALE AND ESKDALE PRIMARY SCHOOLS SUPER 4’S (RACE 1) - 800m | For this year’s Super 4’s Cross Country we introduced an 800m race for children to participate in for fun or for those that are new or just starting running activity.

Internet Safety Day
Langholm primary have been thinking about ways in which we can keep safe online. PC McGoldrick came in to speak to and we created posters to remind us how to keep safe.
Children's Mental Health Week 2022
Children's Mental Health Week took place from February 7-13th. At Langholm Primary, we spent time thinking about how we could imporve our wellbeing. Children took part in a range of activities including yoga, relaxation, mindlful colouring and nature walks.
Scottish Celebrations
As part of our Scottish Celebrations, Primary 4-6 learned and recited Scottish poetry. These were judged in school and the pupils certainly didn’t make the judges jobs easy. The winner from each class received a £10 book token.
Primary 7 recited Burns Poetry. This was judged by Nancy McLure from the Ladies Burns Society. Thank you to them for providing prizes for our winners.

New Maths Resources
Langholm and Canonbie Primary Schools joint application to the Funders' Forum for the Developing Number Knowledge Project has been successful with £1500 awarded to provide additional resources to enhance the application of practical maths skills in each setting. Health and Wellbeing Day
Langholm Nursery and Primary had a wonderful start to Term 3 as they participated in a Health and Wellbeing day. All the children got out for a walk around our local area and thought about what their aims were for 2022. A lovely way to start our new term.
Zoolab Visit
Primary 3 had a wonderful visit from Zoolab. This was part of their topic work about minibeasts.

Primary 7 Curling Competition
Huge congratulations to the Langholm Primary 7 Curling Team who won the Annandale and Eskdadle Primary Schools Curling Festival. Our team were unbeaten in an event that included 24 teams from primary schools across the area. we would like to thank all the helpers, coaches and The Stevenson Trust whose funding has allowed the children from our primary school to access extra sessions at the ice rink. Well done team!
