The assembly programme for Langholm Nursery and Primary tackles issues and deals with important events that occur from time to time in the life of any school. We do not deliver assemblies which require pupils to participate in religious observance. The Scottish Government’s Curriculum for Excellence: Provision of Religious Observance in Schools (March 2017) states that schools may feel that a different name for the events that meet their religious observance requirements will be more appropriate to their individual context and culture. At Langholm Nursery and Primary, which is a non-denominational school, the use of the term ‘Time for Reflection’ is considered appropriate by the school community.
Parents have a statutory right to remove their children from participating in religious observance, as long as their children attend a non-denominational school. In Scotland, children or young people do not have the right to withdraw themselves from religious observance.
At Langholm Nursery, Primary and Academy, the assembly programme is shared with parents on the school website and in the school handbook. Parents may remove their child/children from a planned assembly by writing to the Headteacher, Ms McLean in advance. August 2026
