Froebel in Childhood Practice
Following some extensive staff training in 2020 and 2021, Canonbie Nursery has begun to adopt a Frobelian approach. The main Froebelian principles are outlined in the poster shown here.

Nursery Curriculum
As well as using the Froebel Principles at Canonbie Nursery we use a play based and child led approach to plan meaningful experiences for our children.
These experiences cover all of the curriculum areas in The Curriculum for Excellence (more information here) and focus on eight skills for life.

Outdoor Learning at Canonbie Nursery
We take Outdoor Learning very seriously at Canonbie Nursery, utilising our brilliant nursery garden and the school field as well as the River Esk and beautiful local woodlands. We plan a specific outdoor session weekly in all weathers (wellies and wetsuits are provided if you dont have your own). Snack is provided outdoors as well as a pop up toilet! We also held our 2020 leavers graduation in the local woods which was very special.
Our Nursery Garden
Our nursery garden has many sensory and active areas for children to enjoy. We provide oppotunities to play and explore on a number of different surfaces such as grass, astroturf, soft pour and tarmac.
The School Field
Next to the nursery garden we have access to the school field, where the children can dig, splash in puddles, play in a tyre swing and observe the many birds and minibeasts who are resident.
The River Esk
A short walk off site brings us to the River Esk and community playing field and play park. Our children enjoy visiting this area to find different wild riverside plants and throw stones in the river. There is always time for a play in the park too!
Local Woodland
We are very fortunate to have access to a local woodland a short walk away from the nursery. The children have had opportuniites to build dens, explore the woodland creatures and plants, play hide and seek and use the natural materials to build on their skills and make progress in literacy and maths.
