The Department is run by Mrs Cook and we currently run courses from S1 through to S6.

These courses include : National 4 & 5 Art & Design, Higher Art & Design, Advanced Higher Art & Design and Level 4  Photogrpahy.

The Department prides itself on the high quality of artwork produced.

Broad General Education

The first three years of Art & Design at Langholm are a great opportunity for our learners to build upon and progress from the experiences they will had enjoyed at Primary level.  This includes working towards areas of Expressive Art such as portraiture and still life using a range of different combinations of materials.  Pupils also explore the world of Design, from experimenting with digital pattern-making to ceramics.

Some of the nationally recognised Outcomes we explore at this stage include: 

"By continuing to experiment with a range of media and technologies, I can handle them with 
control and assurance to create images and objects. I can apply my understanding of the 
properties of media and of techniques to specific tasks."

and...

"By working through a design process in response to a design brief, I can develop and 
communicate imaginative and original design solutions."

National 5 and Higher

The senior phase is when pupils take even more ownership and responsibility for their learning.  The result is that the department turns out a wonderful range of personalised work, which privelages the individual and allows for self-expression. Like at the Broad General Eduaction phase of their development, National 5 and Higher young people explore two main areas of practical work, Expressive Art and Design. National Progression Award (NPA) Level 4 Photography Skills

The Art and Design curriculum is supplemented by a Photography Skills course which introuduces pupils to some of the fundamental theoretical and practical concerns associated with landscape and portrait photogrpahy.  This is a great course for any young person interested in the subject of photography but who wishes to explore it in more depth.  Please follow the link below for more details on the course via our partners at the SQA.
